“True, comics are a popular art, and yes, I believe their primary obligation is to entertain, but comics can go beyond that, and when they do , they move from silliness to significance."  Bill Watterson

Comics and Cookies

Want to go somewhere fun?  Go to Comics and Cookies at Rocketship in Brooklyn on November 9 from 4:00 p.m. to 6 p.m. for comics, ice cream, and cookies from three of my favorite comic artists for kids: Raina Telgemeier, Matt Loux, and Dave Roman!  This sounds like so much fun!

Smile: A Dental Drama

Smile: A Dental Drama by Raina Telgemeier is a webcomic which chronicles her personal experiences with loosing her two front teeth when she was running and knocked them out.  Since I lost a tooth when I fell out of a swing, it was easy for me to identify with Raina.  Here is a comment from from a fan:

"Your comics are awesome! My eight-year-old daughter hit a metal pole on the playground with her front tooth and is having a root canal next week. I let her read your comics, which she loved--and they made her feel better prepared for her procedure. They also made her realize that she doesn't have it quite so bad! "

If you haven't tried a web comic, this is a very kid-friendly introduction.  Raina's story and illustrations are marvelous!

There is exciting news about SMILE.  It will be published by Scholastic in 2010.  Until then, follow the story online.
